Trip Planner: South America / Brazil / State of Rio de Janeiro / Rio de Janeiro / Sugarloaf Mountain
Ride or walk to the city’s iconic Sugarloaf Mountain, named in the 16th century after the conical shape of a concentrated loaf of sugar, which it strongly resembles. The mountain is located at the mouth of Guanabara Bay, on a peninsula sticking out into the Atlantic Ocean. Towering 396 m (1,299 ft) above the bay, the mountain is one of several monolithic granite and quartz formations rising from the water’s edge. To reach the summit, you can take one of two glass-walled cable cars, which operate continuously throughout the day. These bubble-shaped cars, which can hold up to 65 people each and run along a 1,400-meter (4,593 ft) scenic route, offer passengers 360-degree views of the surrounding city. Sugarloaf Mountain reviews
A must see sight in Rio. Ticket can be bought online or onsite. Express tickets cost double. We went when schools were closed and the place was packed. we had 2 hour wait to get to first stop and subsequent waits were shorter. The sights from the mountains were amazing. It could have been organized better in terms of people management. Tour groups with 15-20 people constantly ( in agreement with staff) join lines as they please.
What an exciting experience riding on that cable up to the mountain. They do stuff a lot of folks in there, so be sure to get next to a window for the full experience! The views from atop Sugarloaf are vast and beautiful! An experience to remember for a lifetime!
