Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Veneto / Province of Venice / City of Venice / Venice / St Mark's Campanile
Overlooking the city's famous lagoon, St Mark's Campanile is one of the Venice's most recognizable symbols. Originally constructed as a lighthouse, this 99 m (323 ft) tall bell tower stands alone in one corner of St. Mark's Square. The tower's simple form has a fluted brick shaft topped by a belfry housing five bells. A pyramidal spire with a golden weathervane in the form of the archangel Gabriel caps the tower. Constructed in the ninth century on ancient Roman foundations, the bell tower underwent a massive reconstruction after a sudden collapse in 1902. Once the site of Galileo's observatory, the tower now features an elevator for easy access to the top and views of the lagoon and distant Alps. St Mark's Campanile reviews
Only 10 euros to take the lift to the top of the tower. You get an amazing view of the city. I recommend going at sunset to really get a sense of the beauty of Venice (there's also fewer people). more »
Another must see and visit place, we stayed about 5 minutes walk from this area, we enjoyed it. However, it is the busiest part of the island and I highly recommend to explore more like Burano and... more »
Be careful of when the bells will go off (unfortunately I was standing right beside one when they decided to chime many times). It is just an awe inspiring place.Great view over entire Venice. Definitely must go here when you visit Venice. It is the highest possible point and you can take some awesome pictures. Also due to the height, there is a very chilling wind blowing.
You must get a look from every side to really see Venice. It is beautiful at sunset. Be careful of when the bells will go off (unfortunately I was standing right beside one when they decided to chime many times). Also due to the height, there is a very chilling wind blowing. This is very nice if you have been running arround the city in the hot sun all day.
