Pilgrimage Church of Wies became a pilgrimage site after the figure of the Scourged Savior began to weep tears in 1738. Local authorities converted a hasty chapel into a Rococo church in the late 1740s, hoping to make the supernatural visible. UNESCO recognized the church in 1983 as a World Heritage site. The setting, other attractions nearby, and the surprising size of this rural church make it worth the drive out here.
