A World Heritage Site and the largest Buddhist shrine in the world, Borobudur Temple features nine stacked, six square, and three circular platforms, crowned by an impressive central dome. Erected in the 9th century from over two million stone blocks, this temple features over 2,600 relief panels and more than 500 Buddha statues. The central dome alone contains 72 Buddha figures arranged around a stupa, a mound-like structure designed as a place of prayer and meditation. Begin your tour at the eastern entrance and proceed clockwise, a traditional way to move inside Buddhist monuments. Admission into the shrine also allows you to enter the nearby archeological museum, displaying thousands of photographs and carvings. Make Borobudur Temple a centerpiece of your Magelang vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Magelang holiday planner.

Borobudur temple, gardens and musuem a wonderful experience - well kept and a remarkable temple. But keeping chained elephants in a small concrete enclosure within this UNESCO site is shocking.

We experienced a sunrise from the temple, what an amazing experience besides from such a historic place🙏. The journey to the top fills one with awe. The detailed carvings displaying the Buddhist journey is amazing. Wow, what a great experience. Lots of additional activities to do and a restaurant available to offer food and drinks. 👍

Came to this place before the Covid Pandemic hit. This place is wonderful and the vibe is relaxing. Access to the location is easy. The last time I visited here, the view at the top of the temple was amazing and crowded with tourists. If you want to visit here, please pay attention to the signs in several locations to help keep the temple well maintained.
