Locarno — 1 night

Locarno's Mediterranean climate, palm trees, and 2,300 hours of sunlight per year make this city the warmest in Switzerland.
Start off your visit on the 22nd (Fri): take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Monte Tamaro and then kick back and relax at Lido di Lugano. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 23rd (Sat): make a short side trip with Cardada, learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at Falconeria Locarno, and then explore the historical opulence of Castelgrande.

For ratings, reviews, and more tourist information, you can read our Locarno trip itinerary planning site.

Zurich to Locarno is an approximately 2.5-hour car ride. You can also take a train; or do a combination of flight and train. In July, plan for daily highs up to 33°C, and evening lows to 20°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 23rd (Sat) early enough to drive back home.

Experience Switzerland's Mediterranean side with a visit to Ticino, where Italian flair dominates. Palm trees, beaches, piazzas, and old churches fill this Italian-speaking canton. Mirroring blue lakes reflect the majestic Alps not far off. Enjoy "la dolce vita" with an espresso among the sub-tropical gardens, romantic landscapes, and historical architecture. Rich indigo flowers dot Alpine pastures and wooded hills rising around the shores of Ticino's lakes, while delicate white camellia line lakeshore promenades. The furthest southern state, Ticino boasts a much milder climate that the rest of the country and offers plenty of sunshine.
